Post 9/11 and the Media:

Media Research

Post 9/11 and the Media:
A lot of movies represent post 9/11 or even Islam phobia for example, True Lies (1994) starring Arnold Schwarzenegger where an Islamic terrorist pursue a career in nuclear annilaition this was before 9/11, and another was ‘The Agency’ replicating Osama Bin Laden’s plans. This also proves theory Edward Said of east vs. west and the west is superior to the east as they will be shown as the hero in the film.

In which narrative have clearly changed in post 9/11 particularly of action films and the role of an hero. Some theorist also believe in ‘good vs. evil’ as the just war narrative was return.  There was a representation of the other which moved towards Middle Eastern countries as this deepened the fear as attacks happened by Muslim fundamentalist; This also shows  the obsessions of the unknown such as aliens, zombies which means Muslims are aliens who want to destroy our world.

Furthermore in the last year, Islam phobia has rise throughout the media due to politics, as the Arab Springs show the east to be superior and the use of technology is expanding as it spread through many different platforms especially e-media and newspaper creating moral panics in today’s society.

Learner Response

Explain how he is a protagonist
Mr Khan is the main protagonist of the sitcom as it is about his life and how people around him are affected by him this leads to theory of character by Vladimir propp as the Mr Khan is the man of the household and is followed by the women to follow his rules.
Explain how target audience are mainstreamers
The audience are mainstreamers as watching programs from a trusted channel like BBC gives them a sense of security, BBC also try to cater to a wide range of audience as they try to inform, educate and entertain.OFCOM
Due to the result of complaints that the OFCOM had got from the show on BBC ONE Citizen Khan, they had got complaints after receiving complaints that it is stereotyping Muslim and insults Islam in which Adil Ray discussed in another article that it is 'simply a British family sitcom' and it is has universal themes of hypocrisy, deceit and relationships which we all connect to.
Use other terminology e.g. Binary opposition ( Levi Strauss)
The audience identification to see the side of a Pakistani v/s a British man shows binary opposites in the story line, to show the difference between Mr Khan and Dave as Mr Khan says 'hello' to him and 'asalam alakium' to others

Self Evaluation

WWW:
Overall I think that my performance was good as I related my research to my own life as I had compared Mr Khan to My father and my life. Another positive aspect about my presentation is that I led the class into a debate over the current Muslim issues such as the 'Film 786' and the pictures of prophet Muhammad.
EBI:

I could of made the character page more attractive and revealing as I could of had images on every slide, but I think I could of talk about every point on my slides.
